Alcohol IOP & Drug Rehab: Substance Use Outpatient Treatment

Reviewed by: Dr. Michael Vines, MD / Medically reviewed on: July 26

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured schedule of group and individual therapy for alcohol or drug use that does not require living at a facility or 24-hour medical supervision.

As an outpatient drug rehab, Arizona IOP delivers this level of care in Scottsdale for adults who need consistent clinical treatment while maintaining their job, home, and family responsibilities. This article covers who IOP fits, what a substance abuse IOP treats, and how to start.

What Is an Alcohol and Drug IOP?

A substance abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a scheduled clinical treatment for alcohol or drug use delivered through group and individual therapy sessions, without an overnight stay. Clients attend sessions and then return to their homes, jobs, and families each day.

Arizona IOP structures this treatment as part of its broader addiction treatment approach, around Masters Level Licensed Therapists who lead group work and individual sessions.

Something has changed if daily responsibilities have started slipping around drinking or drug use, but leaving work or family for weeks at a time is not an option. IOP exists for that exact gap between doing nothing and checking into residential care.

Is IOP Enough for My Alcohol or Drug Use?

IOP is enough for alcohol or drug use when the person does not need 24-hour medical supervision to stay safe. It is not enough on its own when withdrawal risk, medical instability, or safety concerns require constant monitoring. The right fit depends on where someone is clinically, not on preference alone.

When IOP Fits

IOP fits adults who can safely manage their day between sessions and are not at risk of dangerous withdrawal. Clients keep their cell phones, their jobs, and their housing throughout treatment. It’s rarely one isolated issue: substance use is often tangled with anxiety, depression, trauma, or another co-occurring condition, and IOP is built to work through addiction and mental health together rather than treating one and ignoring the other.

When a Higher Level of Care Is Needed

A higher level of care is needed when someone requires 24-hour medical supervision, such as during acute withdrawal. Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) treatment is explicitly not equivalent to residential treatment or medical detox. If a client needs detox or a higher level of care, Arizona IOP can direct them toward that level of care rather than attempting to manage it within an outpatient schedule.

You don’t have to decide alone which level of care is right. Call (480) 418-1570 to talk through what fits before committing to a program.

What Happens in a Group Session?

A group session at Arizona IOP is a structured therapy session run by a Masters Level Licensed Therapist with a small number of clients working through addiction and mental health together.

Arizona IOP runs 12 to 15 clients per group, compared to an Arizona industry average of 29. A smaller group means each client gets more direct attention from the therapist and more room to speak within a session, rather than sitting in a large room with limited airtime. Arizona IOP also maintains an industry-leading neurofeedback room as part of its clinical offering.

Which Substances and Conditions Does Arizona IOP Treat?

As a substance abuse IOP, Arizona IOP treats alcohol, opioids, fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, meth, marijuana, ecstasy, and Adderall use. It also treats anxiety, depression, co-occurring conditions, and trauma alongside substance use, since these conditions frequently appear together.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), including Suboxone, is available for clients whose treatment plan calls for it. This means someone managing opioid use, for example, does not have to choose between medication support and therapy; both can happen within the same treatment plan.

Smaller groups change what a client can get out of a session: more direct feedback from the therapist, less time waiting for a turn to speak, and a better read on how each person is actually doing week to week. Arizona IOP holds the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval and is AZ SafeClean Certified, which are third-party markers of clinical and facility standards rather than internal claims.
